Machame, Marangu or Lemosho? Choosing Your Kilimanjaro Route

Kilimanjaro has several established routes, and choosing the right one shapes your entire climb.

The Machame Route ('Whiskey Route') is the most popular for good reason: scenic, well-graded, and with a strong acclimatisation profile when you add an extra night at Barranco — our default recommendation for most climbers.

The Marangu Route ('Coca-Cola Route') is the only route with hut accommodation instead of tents, and the shortest at 5-6 days — but its rapid ascent profile gives it a lower summit success rate.

The Lemosho Route approaches from the west, offering the most remote and scenic experience with excellent acclimatisation over 7-8 days, at a higher price point.

Whichever route you choose, the single biggest factor in reaching Uhuru Peak is time: longer itineraries with proper acclimatisation days consistently produce higher summit success rates than the shortest options.
